So we meet again...

Soooo, I haven't posted in this blog for a long time. Haha oops. I ran the marathon in may and then kinda just forgot about this blog due to wedding planning, etc. But I promise you, I HAVE been working out... just not posting about it. But I think I'd like to start again. It's a way of holding myself accountable. If you need a refresher of who I am and what this blog is all about... go here to my first post. :)

Since I last officially wrote... I've done a lot! Let's see...
~I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon
~I got MARRIED!
~I went on an amazing honeymoon
~I am no longer a vegetarian
~I moved out of the city and into a house in the suburbs

Those are the biggies. As I just mentioned, I am no longer a vegetarian. I was a vegetarian for 2 years from September 2008 to August 2010. I really enjoyed it and amazingly didn't really miss meat at all. However, I realized that there are healthy options with meat and sometimes it's a lot easier. So on our honeymoon in August, I started slowly eating meat again. I still do not eat red meat, and have no desire to. It's not good or good for you. I mainly stick to lean chicken and turkey. And I don't even eat it that much. Most of my days are still spent eating vegetarian. I do not cook meat. I am still not there yet... So we mainly eat vegetarian at home, unless my husband Brett wants meat and then he has to cook it. Haha And I occasionally have a turkey sandwich for lunch. And I am still counting calories. It truly works for me, maybe not for others, but for me it really does.

As for exercise, my workouts have been fairly consistent, considering all the crazy hecticness (definitely not a word) that we've been going through, like getting married, moving, traveling, etc. I have tried my best to stick to my workout routine through all the craziness, as much as possible. Some weeks I'd get 4 or 5 workouts in, other weeks I was lucky to have time for 1. But I'm happy to report that I'm finally getting back into a really consistent workout schedule and I love it!

Lately, I've been challenging myself to really count calories for every single food from the day.
I count calories on http://caloriecount.about.com/. It takes a lot of time and effort, but to complete a day and then be able to read my analysis and "grade" for the day is really rewarding to me. And it shows me what I am doing right and what I'm doing wrong. It's really easy for me to count all my calories until I go home from work, and then sometimes at home, I'm not so strict. But I've been challenging myself lately to BE strict and record every single thing I put in my mouth and so far this week I HAVE!

Today is Wednesday and so far this week has been GREAT in the areas of workouts & eating well!

Monday
Workout - Running outside: 3 miles
I cannot explain to you how difficult it is to run in my new neighborhood. 3 miles was not hard AT ALL in my old neighborhood of flat streets. Our new house is completely surrounded by really really steep hills. Running up and down them for even just 3 miles is really hard work. So I've been sticking to 3 mile runs because with all the hills, it's giving me just as good of a workout as running more miles on flat streets. Plus, it gets dark SO early now... so by the time I get home from work, I only have about a half hour outside before it's pretty much pitch black outside = not safe. And our neighborhood has no street lights... weird!

Diet: A-
I ate really well on Monday and I recorded every single food. We just had turkey sandwiches and veggie soup for dinner. Nice and light, considering all the food we consumed this past holiday weekend consisting of TWO Thanksgiving dinners... haha. Pretty proud of my A- grade for the day!

Tuesday
Workout - Firm Total Body Time Crunch with weights
I don't care what anyone says... I LOVE my Firm videos. They are the sole workout I did in 2008 when I lost 20 pounds. They are fun and they are effective! I changed it up a bit yesterday. As I did the video, I turned it's volume down and put on a Rhianna Pandora station, and it was so FUN! Those songs really got me moving, even though I was still following along with the video. It's important to change things up every once in a while, so you don't get bored.

Diet: B+
Yesterday was another great day of eating well. I made mexican tortilla and black bean pie for dinner. I showed self-control and limited myself to only 2 pieces, compared to how much I'm sure I could have eaten. Haha. I also did not snack after work or after dinner, which is major! B+ is still great in my book!

So here we are at Wednesday. So far, I've been eating great. Coffee & cereal for breakfast. And I just finished lunch, which consisted of a turkey sandwich on wheat bread, strawberry non-fat yogurt, and a tasty apple. After work, I plan on doing a Firm video, since the weather is not looking so great outside for a run. I can't wait to blast my Rhianna Pandora station again while working out! I am so weird!

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I FINISHED THE PITTSBURGH MARATHON!!! As you know (if you read this blog), I have been training for the Pittsburgh Marathon since January. There were ups and downs throughout my training, but all in all, I think I did a pretty good job with it. Then, the day was finally here: Sunday, May 2, 2010!

I woke up around 5:45am and ate a banana and a bagel. I got all ready and was out the door around 6:30am. Brett dropped me off downtown near the start line and I met up with Lee and Jess (brother and future sister-in-law who were running with me). The weather forecast all weekend had said that Sunday would be rainy and stormy. At 7:00am, it wasn't raining, but it was hot and humid! It was already 65 degrees outside at 6:00am and the humidity was intense. We got in line at the start, and waited to hear the gun go off. I was already sweating from the humidity and I hadn't even started running yet! And then what do ya know, as soon as the race started, it started to rain. It was only a light drizzle at first, and it felt GOOD! Around mile 3, it started POURING down rain. I was hard to see, it was raining so hard. Our shoes and socks were immediately soaked, along with the rest of ourselves.

It rained pretty much throughout the entire 26.2 miles. We were going strong for the first 9 miles, and then Jess's knees started to give out. We stopped at a medial tent around mile 10 and they gave her some icy hot and we were back on our way. We came into Southside, and the full marathoners split off from the half marathoners. The half marathoners headed a different route to the finish, and the marathoners continued on. That was a really good feeling for me. Now it was just the marathoners on our course (besides the couple people doing the relays). In Southside, Jess had to stop a couple times and walk it out, but we decided that we were going to do this marathon together as a team and we did. So we walked a bit, then got back into running to cross the Birmingham Bridge. That's where we met up with Brett riding his bike! He came by to cheer us on and report back to my mom and aunt on our progress, who were volunteering at a water station around mile 15. Heading into Oakland was the biggest hill of the course. It was a long, steep hill up into Oakland. It was rough, but we ran the whole hill. There were high school cheerleaders cheering us on as we went, and I will say it definitely helped! Towards the top of the hill, my right knee started hurting pretty badly. I had to stop and walk it out a bit, but then we got back into running.

We got to mile 15 where we saw my mom and aunt cheering us on and giving us water! That was definitely a much needed boost in the middle of the race! We stopped at another medical tent around mile 16, where Jess and I got some icy hot for our knees. It actually helped! It wasn't until around mile 20 that all three of us were starting to hurt pretty bad. Jess and my knees were killing and Lee had blisters all over his feet from the rain soaking his socks and shoes. The last 5 miles were very painful. We stuck together the entire 26.2 miles, even if someone had to stop and walk, we all stopped and walked. I don't know that I could have ran the marathon without Lee and Jess by my side. The whole time we were encouraging each other and pushing through together. When we finally saw the finish line, I was so emotional that I just wanted to cry. I couldn't believe that I had actually done it, I ran and finished a marathon. The three of us crossed the finish line together, with Brett on the sidelines cheering us on. We received our marathon medal and it really set in. I DID IT!!!

A special shout out to all the volunteers and spectators along the course, you are amazing!! Thank you for standing out in the rain all day and cheering us on! You all helped us cross that finish line with your support!! Thank you!!! :)

Week 11

Oops! I haven't updated in a couple weeks since our crazy snow storms!

Well, I'm happy to report that the weather lately has been sunshine and warmer temperatures!! The recent weather has definitely made my runs much more enjoyable. I even look forward to getting out there because the outdoors are just so beautiful when the sun is shining and the birds are chirping. For sure a great running motivator.

This past Sunday, I hit a personal milestone. I ran 16 miles! This is HUGE for me. Growing up, anyone who knows me knows I was NOT a runner. I had no desire to ever run and never understood why some people actually liked to run. I used to say, "Uhh, the only time you'll find me running is if I'm being chased!" Now, this outlook has changed completely! I truly enjoy running. Who ever imagined I'd say that?! But it really has grown on me. Since I started college back in 2003, I would run a little bit every once in a while, but not for any great distance or length of time. It wasn't until summer/fall of last year that I actually started running pretty religiously. And my love for it slowly grew. There's something about running that is just so peaceful to me: out on the road with just yourself and your thoughts. It's a great time to think. It gets you away from the busy hustle and bustle of daily life and let's you take a step back (ooor a run forward...) and just be in your thoughts and nothing else matters. It really is very 'zen' if you will... :)

Accomplishing 16 miles gave me the courage and confidence I needed to believe that I really can run the marathon. All my runs before that, I would come home still skeptical about whether or not I really would be able to physically run 26.2 miles. But coming home after my 16 mile run, I was PUMPED! And even EXCITED for the marathon. I know I can do it!

Week 8

Well, I'm officially in week 8 of my marathon training, which is about half way through the training program. It has not been easy! And I'm going to be honest, I have missed a few days of training. The terrible snow storm(s) Pittsburgh got in February really put a damper on my running outside. It's kind of impossible to run in 2-3 feet of snow, ice, and slush:


Yeeeeah... So I had to find alternative ways to get my running in at different gyms, etc. So it's been tough, due to the crazy snow, but I'm not giving up! I'm pushing through! The sidewalks and streets are finally clearing up again, so I'm back outside getting my miles in, and it feels great!

It's hard to fathom that I'll actually be running 26.2 miles all at once... I'm not even up to running half of that yet! But I know I can do it! I just need to stick to my training plan.

Only 8 1/2 more weeks to go! Yikes!

Holy Snow in my Eyeballs

I just got back from my run today... 3 miles. Let's recap:

Miles: 3
Temperature: 23 degrees
Wind: Ridiculousness
Snow: All up in my eyeballs!

This has, hands down, been my coldest run yet. The sidewalks were covered in snow and ice. The wind was just unbearable, and then towards the last mile of my run, I basically entered a snow globe and could no longer see 2 feet in front of me.

Someone please remind me why I am doing this?!?!

(But hey, at least I got it done, right?!)

Pittsburgh Marathon: May 2, 2010

That's right, you read the title... MARATHON! 26.2 MILES!

Back in December, one day I decided that I wanted to run a marathon and have that be one of the things on my "Anna's Life List" to complete. So I did some research and discovered that the Pittsburgh Marathon would be coming up in May 2010. So I decided, ok I can do this!!

I talked to Lee and Jess about it, who are also planning on running the marathon, and we found a good training program to get us ready. Training started Monday, January 11, 2010. I'm now into week 3 of training and I'm doing great! So far, so good! I haven't missed one day of training yet. I'm being very disciplined with this. I think because I know that if I slack, , then come May 2 when I have to run 26.2 MILES (!!?!?), it will not be a fun day. So I am determined to stick to this training diligently, because I know I need to. Even in the snow, wind, rain (I don't own a treadmill), I run outside and get my miles in. It's all about layering, people! Most days, Brett thinks I'm crazy for running in this weather, but what days does he not think I'm crazy just in general? ;)

So, training is going well so far. I'm still trying to wrap my head around running 26.2 miles in a ROW... seems so crazy to me right now. But I am hoping as training goes on, it will seem more possible. I won't lie.. I am terrified. But what an accomplishment this will be to run a MARATHON. I would have never thought I'd do this in all my life. But I am ready! And so excited/scared! :)

Updates, Updates!

Well, it's been a while since I last posted here. I've got a couple other blogs that I write in nowadays: my everyday blog and my wedding blog. And I actually forgot all about my diet/fitness blog! But, time to change that!

So, some updates: Since I last blogged here (June 2009, whoa!), I've been doing pretty good with working out. I've really grown to love running... Anyone who knows me, knows this is HUGE! We even had a little running competition last Fall: It was city vs. city, Pittsburgh vs. DC, Me & Brett vs. Lee & Jess! It was so much fun! We would compete to see who could run the most miles by a certain date. Well, it ended in a tie, because Brett ended up having to get shoulder surgery before the competition was over and he couldn't run. But during the time we were competing, it was great! I think it really pushed all of us to run more!

We also ran in the 5K Dogfish Dash! It was a race put on by our favorite brewery in Delaware: Dogfish Head! It was awesome! It was supposed to be a light-hearted, fun race, and they even asked runners to dress up in costumes completely made from recyclable materials. We were ALL for this! However, when we showed up for race day... it seems we were the ONLY ones all for dressing up... but it turned out to be awesome, because we won prizes for best costume! So as you can see, I've been keeping active! And it feels so good! Plus, I am getting married this coming August, and that is definitely motivation to stay active and eat healthy, so I can look great on my wedding day!
